Full Description
March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a ring ditch, possibly the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, which is later reused as a medieval or post medieval post mill, are visible on aerial photographs of Bradwell (S1). The reuse as a post mill is indicated by the cross-shaped cut clearly visible in the centre of the ring ditch. This post mill is located within an area of post medieval fields (NHER 43453), also visible as cropmarks. Another possible post mill mound is located 330m to the southeast (NHER 43450). This may also be reusing a Bronze Age round barrow mound, although this is not certain, see record for details. Another ring ditch is located just over 400m to the east (NHER 43449).
The ring ditch is centred on TG 5023 0457 and measures 19m in diameter. The cross-shaped slot is located just to the north of the centre of the ring and consists of two intersecting ditches, 4-5m long.
S. Massey (NMP), 29 March 2006.
