Map

March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The soilmarks of a possible medieval to post medieval field bank and a ditched boundary are visible on aerial photographs of former arable land in Bradwell (S1). The site is centred on TG 5116 0411. One of these boundaries appears to be cut through by a field boundary marked on the 1842 Bradwell Tithe map (S2). The site has since been developed into housing, Chestnut Avenue, and allotments.

The soilmark of the banked boundary runs from TG 5118 0421 to TG 5118 0401 and is up to 15m wide. This width is likely to be reflective of the plough spreading the bank material, rather than it’s original width as an earthwork. A narrow, double ditched soilmark is visible forming an L-shaped boundary, which partly overlies the soilmark of the bank. However it is probable that the ditched feature was actually overlain by the bank material originally and is only revealed through the plough levelling of the bank.
