Summary

A sub-rectangular mound, surrounded by a ditched enclosure, is visible as an earthwork and as vegetation marks on aerial photographs. Its date is unknown. The enclosure appears to fit the drainage pattern depicted on both historic and modern maps; this comprises linear and curvilinear elements and is likely to be the cumulative product of drainage schemes carried out in the medieval and post medieval periods. While the enclosure may date to the same period, the mound could be an earlier, pre-existing feature, such as a saltern mound.

Map

March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A mound is visible as an earthwork and vegetation mark on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 5002 0601. It is surrounded by a ditched enclosure, which partially mirrors, or at least joins to, the drainage pattern depicted on historic and modern maps, e.g. (S4). The drainage pattern is probably the product of cumulative medieval and post medieval drainage works, including the adaptation of natural channels (see Williamson (S5)). The enclosure is likely to be of similar date. It is possible that the mound it surrounds is also contemporary with this activity, the interior of the enclosure perhaps being used for some kind of specialised function, or simply for depositing spoil from the surrounding drains. Alternatively, it may have been a pre-existing feature, perhaps a medieval (or earlier) saltern. A similar mound is visible 210m to the northeast (part of NHER 43465).

The mound is sub-rectangular in plan and measures approximately 30m long and 17m wide. The enclosure is slightly polygonal in plan and measures approximately 52m long and 31.5m wide externally, and 44m long and 21m wide internally. Both the mound and the enclosure still survived as slight earthworks in 1989 (S3).
