Summary

A group of drains is visible as earthworks and vegetation marks on aerial photographs. Part of one ditch is depicted on Bradwell Tithe Map (1842), but the drains are otherwise undated. Their generally linear appearance, however, suggests that a post medieval date is likely for the whole site.

Map

April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A group of drains is visible as earthworks and vegetation marks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S5), centred at TG 5107 0647. Part of one of the drains (visible between TG 5061 0646 and TG 5063 0646) corresponds with a boundary depicted on Bradwell Tithe Map (S6), indicating that it was in use in the 19th century. The other drains are undated, but their generally linear or rectilinear pattern contrasts with the sinuous medieval to post medieval drains mapped in the vicinity (for example, NHER 43468 260m to the west) and a post medieval date for the site seems likely. Some of the drains on the southern side of the site may connect to possible ‘foot drains’ (see (S7)) in the adjacent fields to the south (part of NHER 43474). Some of the drains are visible on relatively recent aerial photographs of the site (S8) and may still survive as earthworks.
