Summary

A slight earthwork and vegetation mark visible on aerial photographs probably marks the site of a former pond. The date of the pond is unknown and it is not depicted on any of the historic maps consulted. Like similar ponds in the surrounding area, it may have been associated with the use of the marshes for grazing stock in the medieval and post medieval periods.

Map

April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A probable pond is visible as a slight earthwork and vegetation mark on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5148 0987. Its date is unknown, as it is not depicted on any of the consulted historic maps, such as the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch (S2). It may therefore pre-date the maps and date to the first half of the 19th century or earlier. It might perhaps have been associated with the use of the area for grazing stock in the medieval and post medieval periods. It is surrounded by the sinuous earthworks and vegetation marks of former creeks; these appear to have been natural features and consequently have not been mapped by the NMP.

A number of very similar ponds have been identified in the vicinity of the one described here. Some, such as NHER 42419 115m to the east, are partially or fully infilled features which may pre-date the consulted 19th century maps. Others appear to be modern features, or at least have remained in use into the modern period, and consequently these have not been mapped by the NMP. It is clear from aerial photographs of the site taken in 1989 (S3) that it has now been levelled.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 5 April 2006.
