Full Description
April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A wide (up to 23m), curvilinear bank is visible as an earthwork and vegetation mark on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), between TG 5095 0955 and TG 5126 0941. It is not depicted on any of the consulted historic Ordnance Survey maps, such as the 1st edition 6 inch (S3), and is consequently difficult to date. Given its location in what was an estuary in the Roman period, it is presumably post-Roman in date. Its function is also unclear. It may have been used as a trackway across the marsh, and/or it could have acted as a flood bank. It is cut by a number of minor drains (not mapped by the NMP) which reflect efforts to drain the area perhaps as early as the medieval period. A possible sheep fold of medieval to post medieval date (NHER 43483) was constructed on top of it. In recent decades the site has been substantially levelled (see (S4)) but a slight earthwork may still survive.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 5 April 2006.
