Full Description
April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A small, sub-rectangular enclosure is visible as an earthwork and/or vegetation mark on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5105 0954. Like similar enclosures identified elsewhere on this area of former marshland, its interpretation as a sheep fold of medieval or post medieval date seems plausible. It was perhaps associated with the deliberate collection of manure for use on the surrounding uplands, as described in (S2). It was sited on top of a bank or trackway (NHER 43484), probably to take advantage of the drier ground. Aerial photographs of the site taken in 1989 (S3) demonstrate that it has now been levelled.
The enclosure is roughly rectangular in shape and measures approximately 15.5m by 9m.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 5 April 2006.
