Full Description
April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Up to three World War Two air raid shelters are visible as earthworks and structures on aerial photographs (S1), centred around TG 5250 0954. They lay in the back gardens of 28, 30 and 31 Keyes Avenue. This location, together with their small size, suggests that they were private shelters intended for the use of these particular households. They may have been Anderson shelters or similar proprietary designs. The southernmost shelter, visible in the garden of Number 28, is the most convincing of the three. It consisted of a mound, probably an earth-covered or sandbagged structure, with an entrance at its east end. This was protected by a blast wall or bank. The small rectangular structure at Number 30, which appears to have had a curved profile, may have been a surface Anderson shelter without its usual covering of earth (or with only a thin covering). The rather untidy mound in the garden of Number 31 may have been a covered and/or semi-sunken shelter. Recent aerial photographs of the site, e.g. (S2), demonstrate that the shelters have since been levelled.
