NHER 43506 (Monument record) - Site of World War Two air raid shelters at 82, 95 and 96 Garfield Road

Three World War Two air raid shelters are visible as earth and vegetation covered structures on aerial photographs (S1), between TG 5261 0894 and TG 5261 0889. They lay in the front gardens of 82, 95 and 96 Garfield Road. This location, together with their small size, suggests that they were private shelters, each intended for the use of these particular households. All of the structures appear to have had a curved or parabolic profile. They may have been Anderson shelters or similar proprietary designs. Further shelters may have existed in other front gardens along this terrace, but nothing else was clear enough on the consulted aerial photographs to warrant mapping. Recent aerial photographs of the area, e.g. (S2), demonstrate that the shelters have now been levelled.
