NHER 43532 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Earthworks of a square enclosure and a ditch

Earthworks of a square enclosure of medieval to post medieval date and a linear ditch are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These earthworks were located at TM 3101 8806. The enclosure has an incomplete square plan with rounded corners. It is defined by a narrow ditch and has an internal width of approximately 9m. The northwestern side of the enclosure lies immediately adjacent to the boundary of the railway line, but is not aligned perpendicular to it. It appears that the enclosure is of an earlier date than the railway line. However, it is not shown on the Earsham enclosure map of 1812 (S2) or any later maps. It is possible that this enclosure is of medieval to early post medieval date but its function is unknown. To the west of the enclosure is a linear ditch earthwork on a roughly northwest to southeast alignment. The earliest map showing this ditch appears to be the first edition 6 inch to the mile of 1887 (S3). It is likely to be of 19th century date and probably dates from the construction of the railway line in the 1860s.
The enclosure earthwork had been destroyed by road improvements by May 1973 (S4)
