Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
A series of conjoined rectilinear pits or large cut areas is visible on 1946 RAF aerial photographs (S1). These form two groups one centred on TG 0590 4484, measuring 108m by 32m, and the other at TG 0591 4475, 82m by 38m. The origin of these rectilinear cuts is not known, although it is likely that they are post-medieval in date. They may relate to the construction of the post-medieval sea bank to the immediate east (NHER 27753), however this does not explain why they are only located at this point, rather than all along the bank. Another possibility is that they are related to an industry such as saltmaking or oyster storage.
S. Massey (NMP), 7 January 2003.
