Mansion of 1857-60 on new site (roads diverted to form park). Constructed for Charles Metcalfe by Newcastle architect John Dobson. Tudor style red brick, three storeys – the upper storey formed by dormers breaking the cornice. Southwest front of four bays plus tower. Gables stepped at base alone. Mullioned windows, external stacks.
Added to HER as the most southerly surviving work of this important architect (a house by him in Hampshire has gone).
