Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmark ditches visible on OS aerial photographs from 1969 (S1) and 1973 (S2); the date and function of the site is not certain. A broad ditch runs from TG 0584 4023 to TG 0594 4026, measuring 105m long and extends in width from 5m to 9.5m, east to west. This linear appears to have perpendicular southern linears at both ends. This gives the impression that the northern part of a rectilinear enclosure is visible. Unfortunately on both photographs further features are obscures by a change in crop to the south. Co-joined to this main linear, at TG 0590 4025, is a rectilinear ditched feature which appears to enclosure a small area, 10m by 12m. The ‘enclosing’ ditches are up to 7m across. At the eastern end a second ditched feature is co-joined, running from TG 0585 4023 to TG 0585 4029 and then continuing to the south to TG 0588 4028. This varies in thickness from 6-10m. These features seem overly broad and do not appear to form any coherent site plan. It is possible that they are geological in origin. The land to the south is quite undulating, with rises and gullies clearly visible. It is possible that these cropmarks are that of gullies and topographical features ploughed flat. However the field has been extensively field-walked (NHER 34177), producing a multi-period range of finds. Bronze Age and Iron Age finds appeared to predominate, so it is possible that if this site is archaeological in origin then it may be late prehistoric in date, possibly representing part of an enclosure.
