April 2006. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of cable trench and conservatory foundations at Holland Court. Contexts 1-91.
Excavation of the cable trench recorded a former flint and mortar road surface (undated) below the present road at the northern end of the trench and brick and mortar walls and foundations representing post medieval structures previously extending from 6 The Close and 7 The Close.
Excavations of footings for the new conservatory recorded three late post medieval pits and several modern pits. These have all been interpreted as relatively recent rubbish pits.
Finds from the watching brief include a small quantity of post medieval pottery, roof tile, and clay pipes, two fragments of post medieval glass, two iron fittings, a bone toothbrush with copper staining, and butchered bone fragments representing a wide range of species and interpreted as good-quality food waste.
