NHER 27876 (Monument record) - Site of World War Two gun emplacement

World War Two gun emplacement on Salthouse heath visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1). The site is centred on TG 0754 4218 and is defined by a C-shaped bank, approximately 1.5-2m thick, and measures 12m by 10m. The entrance to the interior is to the south-east. On the 1946 RAF aerial photographs (S1) an oval structure of some sort, measuring approximately 4.5m by 2.5m across, can be seen in the interior. It is likely to be the remains of the gun mount, holdfast or tripod, rather than the actual gun itself. There are approximately twenty gun emplacement type structures on Salthouse heath, it seems unlikely that all were contemporary and may have been related to training exercises. It is possible that some of them were searchlight emplacements.
