Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of possible World War Two gun emplacement or similar structure, visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1) and 1950 (S2). The site consists of an oval hollow or pit centred on TG 0761 4211, measuring 9m by 7m. This appears to be completely surrounded by a slight bank 1m wide. These earthworks were mainly mapped from the 1950 RAF aerial photographs (S2), as they were not clear on the 1946 aerial photographs (S1), although they are faintly discernible. By comparison with other World War Two earthworks on the heath this site may be a gun position or emplacement. Although it is not as clear as the others on the 1946 aerial photographs, so this would indicate that it is part of an earlier phase of World War Two activity on the heath or that it served a different purpose.
S. Massey (NMP), 15 April 2003.
