Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Earthwork trenches possibly post-medieval or World War Two in date visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1). It is not clear whether the earthworks are military trenches or some sort of earlier extractive trench. The fact that there is no definite evidence of recent activity on the aerial photographs may suggest that they are indeed post-medieval in date. The U-shaped cut or hollowed area is centred on TG 0539 4236, measuring 7.5m by 3m by up to 1.5m wide. Surrounding this trench to the immediate south is a U-shaped bank of up-cast or mounded up material from TG 0538 4237 to TG 0539 4236, 13m long and 4.5m deep and 1-2.5m wide. These earthworks are slightly terraced into the side of the slope of Hammer Hills.
S. Massey (NMP), 29 April 2003.
