Full Description
October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Slight earthworks of co-joined rectilinear enclosures, raised platform and bank, visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1949 (S1). The earthworks are just visible cut through by later drainage channel, possible post-medieval to modern in date. Centred on TG 0605 4405 is a rectilinear enclosure, measuring 27.5m by 18m. This has a central subdividing ditch, which joins with an the southern edge of sub-rectangular interior enclosure, centred on TG 0605 4406 and measuring 16m by 8m. This feature appears to be flanked by a slight bank to the north, 11m long and 1m wide. To the immediate west of this inner enclosure is roughly rectangular raised platform at TG 0603 4406, measuring 7.5m by 5m. A slight bank runs from the south-eastern corner of this platform and continues to the east, following the line of the enclosure ditch. To the immediate south of this ditched enclosure is the remains of quite a wide bank, 4m across. The bank is cut by later drainage ditch into two sections, one 30m long and another 7m long, running from TG 0604 4404 to TG 0608 4405. Two other ditched corner elements are visible to the east of the main enclosure. One running from TG 0608 4407 to TG 0609 4407, 4m across, which is along the same alignment as the main site. Another cornering ditch runs from TG 0608 4406 to TG 0609 4405, 8m by 9m. This feature is on a different alignment to the rest of the site, suggesting that it might be of a different date. The date of the site is not clear, also it is possible that the bank and the enclosure are not directly contemporary. The date of the enclosure and the platform is not clear, especially as there are no associated finds. The regularity and size of the site could suggest that it is Roman, although it could equally date to the medieval to post-medieval periods.
