Full Description
April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A probable air raid shelter, dating to World War Two, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5253 0517. It lay in the back garden of 29 Addison Road, Gorleston-on-Sea. This location, together with its small size, suggests that it was a private shelter, intended for the use of this particular household. The earthwork mound presumably covered a small surface or semi-sunken structure. It may have been an Anderson shelter, or similar proprietary design. The small, detached bank of earth on the northeast side of the shelter may have acted as a blast wall, protecting the entrance. The northwest end of the shelter is obscured by shadow on the consulted aerial photographs and its size and shape must therefore be regarded as approximate. Further shelters may have existed in other nearby gardens, such as Number 31 the adjacent garden to the south, but nothing is clear enough on the consulted aerial photographs to warrant mapping. Recent aerial photographs of the area, for example (S2), demonstrate that the shelter has now been levelled and perhaps partially built over.
