Full Description
October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Earthwork of a large pit or hollow on the heath visible on OS aerial photographs from 1969 (S1). The feature is located at TG 0722 4253 and is sub-circular and approximately 10m in diameter. It is not clear whether this feature is natural/glacial. Other hollows have been excavated on the heath (NHER 6219) and interpreted as prehistoric ‘pit dwellings’ with flints and pot boilers. It is possible that this scooped feature is the remains of a working hollow or similar feature. It is also equally possible that it is a military feature, although it does not show any signs of being recent and fresh on any of the 1946 aerial photographs. It may also be an extraction pit of some sort, possibly medieval to post-medieval in date.
