Full Description
April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Two probable air raid shelters dating to World War Two are visible as earthworks and structures on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5249 0538. They lay in the back gardens of 79 and 80 Burnt Lane, Gorleston-on-Sea. This location, together with their small size, suggests that they were private shelters, intended for the use of these particular households. Either or both may have been Anderson shelters, or similar proprietary designs. The earthwork mound at Number 79 presumably covered a small surface or semi-sunken structure. The shelter at Number 80 was a small rectangular structure, which can be distinguished from a normal outbuilding by its apparently curved shape in profile. This may have been an Anderson shelter without its usual covering of earth. The shelters are not visible on recent aerial photographs of the area, for example (S2), and have almost certainly been levelled.
