Map

November 2003. Norfolk NMP.
Linear ditch visible as earthwork on Muckleburgh Hill on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1) and Hunting Survey photographs from 1969 (S2). The hollow runs from TG 0993 4290 to TG 1000 4288, measuring 72m long and between 1.5-3m wide. The date of this feature is uncertain, although it does seem to pre-date most of the World War Two activity on the hill. The linear is visible on the 1946 aerial photographs (S1) but it does not look as recent and fresh as the surrounding World War Two earthworks. It is possible that it relates to the World War One training that took place on the heaths, although it may be much older, possibly medieval to post-medieval in date.
S. Massey (NMP), 17 November 2003.
