Map

January 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Area of World War Two trenches, pits and barbed wire visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1). It seems likely that all of these earthworks and barbed wire obstructions were constructed as part of training exercises during World War Two.
Two lengths of barbed wire run from TG 0962 4205 to TG 0968 4204 (65m long) and from TG 0972 4209 to TG 0973 4207 (30m). In between these two features are a linear arrangement of eleven small and narrow slit trenches, between 05-2m in length. At the eastern end of this line at two slightly larger trenches at TG 0972 4206 and TG 0973 4206. To the south of this are three pits all between 1.5-2m wide and 3.5-6m long, located at TG 0967 4203, TG 0967 4202 and at TG 0968 4201. These pits are all linked by sections of trench. To the east of this are a group of six pits centred on TG 0971 4203. The easternmost pit is the largest of the group, being 3.5m by 3m. Another group of features is located to the east of the site. The main earthwork is a large oblong sunken feature at TG 0979 4206, measuring 6m by 4m. A narrow bank surrounds this on three sides. To the north of this are two further pits.
