Map

January 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Two groups of World War Two earthwork gun emplacements and pits on Spion Kop, Kelling Heath visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1). It seems likely that these were all constructed as part of training exercises on the heath.
At TG 0960 4210 there is an ovoid hollow, measuring 4m by 3.5m. A semi-circular bank, 1-1.5m wide surrounds this, with an entrance to the south. This appears to be a gun emplacement. To the north is an oblong sunken feature 5m across at TG 0960 4212. To the east of the site is another group of gun emplacements and hollows. At TG 0974 4215 is a sub-circular sunken area, 4.5m wide with a possible entrance to the west. This is surrounded by semi-circular banks to the north and south. To the immediate east of this is another large sunken area, located at TG 0975 4216, measuring 6.5m by 4.5m. This also has a slight bank to the west. At TG 0974 4214 is a similarly sized sub-rectangular hollow. It seems likely that these were all constructed as part of training exercises during World War Two.
S. Massey (NMP), 5 January 2004.
