Map

January 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A group of three circular gun emplacements were constructed in a line on Kelling Heath during World War Two and visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1) and 1950 (S2). Two of the three emplacements are structurally very similar. These are located at TG 0975 4160 and TG 0977 4162. Both consist of a slightly oval sunken area, 6-7m long and 5-6.5m wide and surrounded by a 1.5-2m wide bank. Both have an entrance to the west. To the immediate of these is a similar feature located at TG 0978 4164. This earthwork has a more distinctly oval shape, measuring 11m by 7m and is surrounded by a much narrower bank, again with an entrance to the west. It seems likely that these gun emplacements were built as part of training activities on the heath. The fact that they are in a line may suggest that they were constructed to resemble the layout of an Anti-Aircraft Battery.
