Summary

A probable World War Two bomb crater is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs. It is first visible on aerial photographs taken in March 1944, but may have been created some months earlier. The intended target may have been the railway line (NHER 13575) that once lay approximately 25m to the east. Aerial photographs taken more recently, together with modern Ordnance Survey maps, demonstrate that the site now underlies a road connecting Harfrey’s Road to the A12; the crater itself has presumably been levelled.

Map

May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A probable World War Two bomb crater is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 5200 0587. The intended target may have been the railway line that once lay 25m to the east (NHER 13575). As the feature was not a fresh earthwork in 1944, its identification as a bomb crater is not certain; it might instead be a modern pit or pond, for example. Its circular shape, however, indicates that it is most likely to have been a crater. Aerial photographs taken more recently (S3) and modern Ordnance Survey maps demonstrate that the site now underlies a road connecting Harfrey’s Road to the A12; the crater itself has presumably been levelled.
