Summary

Three probable World War Two bomb craters are visible as cropmarks on 1940s aerial photographs. They are first visible on aerial photographs taken in March 1944, and the fact that they were cropmarks by this date indicates that the bombs must have been dropped several months, or even years earlier. The site lies between two former railway lines, NHER 13574 285m to the northwest and NHER 13575 225m to the east: either of these might have been the intended target for the bombs. Aerial photographs taken more recently, together with modern Ordnance Survey maps, demonstrate that the site now underlies part of Harfreys Industrial Estate.

Map

May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A group of three probable World War Two bomb craters is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 5175 0590. A fourth possible crater is visible to the northeast of the site (at approximately TG 5186 0595) but as this lies in the corner of the field it cannot be distinguished from a modern agricultural mark with any certainty and consequently has not been mapped. The intended target for the bombs may have been either of the two former railway lines that lay 285m to the northwest (NHER 13574) and 225m to the east (NHER 13575). Aerial photographs taken more recently (S3) and modern Ordnance Survey maps demonstrate that the site now underlies part of Harfreys Industrial Estate.
