Full Description
April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A cropmark of a small ring ditch of possible Bronze Age date is visible on aerial photographs (S1). This cropmark is located at TM 3093 8846 and was previously recorded as part of NHER 13612. The ring ditch is sub-circular in plan with a 1.8m wide ditch and an external diameter of 11.5m. It is likely that this ring ditch is of Bronze Age date and, although it is quite small in size, it could relate to a round barrow. This ring ditch lies on the terrace of the River Waveney at approximately 14m OD. Other ring ditch cropmarks are also recorded 280m to the north (NHER 43538) and between 300m and 800m to the south and southwest (NHER 43540, 43610-2). A previous interpretation for this feature was that it was associated with the World War One airfield at this site (NHER 13612). Although no permanent structures are known to have been constructed at the site (S2), this remains a possible interpretation. A further possible ring ditch that was previously noted from the same photographs as this cropmark (S1) as lying 150m to its south is actually natural in origin.
