Summary

Cropmarks of two small ring ditches, possibly relating to Bronze Age round barrows, are visible on aerial photographs. A complete ring ditch cropmark has an 18m external diameter. This ring ditch is crossed by ditches of a coaxial field system of possible Roman date (NHER 43608). A second incomplete possible ring ditch, with a 14m diameter, is located to its west. The ring ditch is only half visible within the field and lies partly in the adjacent woodland. Other larger ring ditch cropmarks are present 160m to the east and northeast (NHER 43535, 43606). The complete small ring ditch cropmark has been destroyed by gravel extraction but the incomplete ring ditch may partly survive.

Map

April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of two small ring ditches, possibly relating to Bronze Age round barrows, are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). These cropmarks are centred on TM 3132 8918. A complete ring ditch cropmark is located at TM 3137 8918. It has a sub-circular plan with a narrow ditch and an 18m external diameter. This ring ditch is crossed by ditches of a coaxial field system of possible Roman date (NHER 43608). A second incomplete possible ring ditch is located 90m further to the west at TM 3128 8919. The ring ditch is only half visible within the field and lies partly in the adjacent woodland. It has a sub-circular plan with a narrow ditch and an external diameter of 14m. It is likely that both of these ring ditches are of Bronze Age date and that they relate to round barrows. They are both located on a gentle east facing slope at approximately 13m to 14m OD. Other larger ring ditch cropmarks are present 160m to the east and northeast (NHER 43535, 43606). The complete small ring ditch cropmark was destroyed by a sand and gravel quarry between 1988 and 1995 (S3-S4). The incomplete ring ditch lies at the edge of the quarry and may partly survive.
