Full Description
April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of a coaxial field system of unknown, possibly Roman, date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). These cropmarks are centred on TM 3150 8919. Fragmentary ditch cropmarks are present forming part of a coaxial field system. The field system lies on a roughly northwest to southeast axis and extends for at least 340m by 250m. No complete fields are visible as cropmarks making their exact sizes impossible to determine. However, in the northwest of the group the fields measure 53m wide by between 86m and 100m in length. These fields cross a ring ditch cropmark of a probable Bronze Age round barrow (NHER 43607). Fields in the centre of this group of cropmarks appear to have dimensions of between 89m and 105m wide by 116m long. This field system does not relate to the post medieval field pattern and is crossed by a cropmark of a medieval to post medieval road (NHER 30622). It is possible that this field system is of Roman date, in which case the ditches must cut across the Bronze Age ring ditch (NHER 43607). The western part of this field system had been destroyed by quarrying by 1995 (S3).
