Full Description
May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A line of ten World War Two bomb craters is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), between TG 5167 0609 and TG 5178 0634. The craters do not appear to have been particularly fresh earthworks on the earliest consulted photographs of the site (S1) and they may have been created several months, or even years, earlier. The intended target for the bombs may have been the former railway lines that lay to the west (NHER 13574) and to the northeast (NHER 13575 and 13581), or the junction between them which lay 250m to the northwest, as shown on the Ordnance Survey 2nd edition 25 inch map (S4). Aerial photographs taken more recently (S5) and modern Ordnance Survey maps demonstrate that the site now underlies part of Harfreys Industrial Estate and also waste ground to the north which appears to have been used to deposit earth, rubbish or similar material. Although one of the craters was still visible in 1989, at TG 5177 0632, they have probably all now been levelled.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 5 May 2006.
