Full Description
May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A probable World War Two bomb crater is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 5147 0668. It appears to have been a relatively fresh earthwork in March 1944 (S1) but its rather irregular shape suggests that it had already been affected by dyke clearance and possibly by being used as a pond (there appears to be a ramp on its northwest side). The intended target for the bomb could have been the railway line that once lay 40m to the east (NHER 13581) or one of the many military installations in the vicinity, such as the cluster of anti invasion defences 200m to the northwest (NHER 42513). Aerial photographs taken more recently (S3), together with modern Ordnance Survey maps, demonstrate that an earthwork bank (part of Gapton Hall Retail Park) has since been built over the site and the crater presumably levelled.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 5 May 2006.
