Full Description
May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A probable air raid shelter dating to World War Two is visible as an extant building or structure on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 5242 0561. It was a small, surface-level structure, which may have been a private shelter rather than one intended for use by the public (compare NHER 43300 255m to the southwest, for example). It stood outside a former pub (marked on the Ordnance Survey 2nd edition 25 inch map (S3)), and may have been used by those living there and/or the pub’s customers. It appears to have had a blast wall on its west side, which presumably protected an entrance. Recent aerial photographs, e.g. (S4), and modern Ordnance Survey maps demonstrate that the shelter has since been levelled and that the site now underlies Beccles Road.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 8 May 2006.
