NHER 44508 (Building record) - Church View, Norwich Street

Two early 19th century houses. Brick with roof of black glazed pantiles. Two storeys and basement.

(S1) still accurate. Date seems to be around 1840. Canopy over doors not there on early 20th century photograph. Unusual in having ground floor raised above a semi basement. One ceiling beam in basement might be 17th century reused, as may some hinges on a stair cupboard. Said locally to have been a doctors house and/or smithy. It would fit a house for a prosperous local doctor. There might well have been a smithy in the outbuildings to the rear.
