Full Description
May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Three probable air raid shelters dating to World War Two are visible as earthworks and structures on aerial photographs (S1), centred around TG 5209 0671. They lay in the back gardens of 58 and 62 Wolseley Road and 12 Gordon Road, Southtown. This location, together with their small size, suggests that they were private shelters, intended for the use of these particular households. They may have been Anderson shelters, or similar proprietary designs. The two on Wolseley Road are visible as bare or only lightly covered rectangular structures with a curved shape in profile; these may have been Anderson shelters without their usual covering of earth. The shelter on Gordon Road is visible as an earthwork mound, which probably covered a small semi-sunken or surface-level structure. A structural element along its east side may have been a blast wall protecting the entrance, or may have been an integral part of the shelter, e.g. a revetment. None of the shelters are visible on recent aerial photographs of the area, e.g. (S2), and they have presumably been levelled.
