Summary

A possible air raid shelter dating to World War Two is visible as an earthwork, probably covering a structure, on 1940s aerial photographs. Its small size and location within an enclosed garden suggest that it was a private shelter, perhaps intended for the use of a single family or household. It may have been an Anderson shelter, or similar proprietary design. The shelter was levelled in the post-war period and no trace of it is visible on recent aerial photographs of the site.

Map

May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A possible air raid shelter dating to World War Two is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 5219 0669. It lay in a garden, adjacent to a large building marked on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map (S3) as a school. This enclosed location suggests that it was a private shelter, while its small size indicates that it could only have been used by a small group of people, perhaps a particular family or household. The earthwork mound, which appears to have had a curved or parabolic shape in profile, probably covered a semi-sunken or surface-level structure. It may have been an Anderson shelter, or a similar proprietary design. At the same time, its interpretation as an air raid shelter is not certain; for example, it could instead have been a bank or hedge. The shelter is not visible on more recent aerial photographs of the site, e.g. (S4), and has presumably been levelled.
