Summary

Up to five probable air raid shelters dating to World War Two are visible as earthworks, probably covering structures, on 1940s aerial photographs. Their small size and location within enclosed gardens suggest that they were private shelters, each intended for the use of a single family or household. They may have been Anderson shelters, or similar proprietary designs. The shelters are not visible on more recent aerial photographs of the site and were presumably levelled in the post-war period.

Map

May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Up to five probable air raid shelters dating to World War Two are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs (S1), between TG 5159 0763 and TG 5160 0761. They lay in the back gardens of 70, 71, 76, 78 and 79 Mill Road, Cobholm Island. This location, together with their small size, suggests that they were private shelters, intended for the use of these particular households. All of the shelters are visible as earthwork mounds, each of which probably covered a small semi-sunken or surface-level structure. Judging by the shape of the mounds, at least some of the underlying structures probably had a curved shape in profile, with flat, vertical façades at their northeast ends. They may have been Anderson shelters, or similar proprietary designs. Two of the shelters, located at the northwest end of the site (at Number 78 and Number 79) appear to have been conjoined and have been mapped as a single, larger mound. It should be noted that all of the shelters are partially obscured by shadows and nearby outbuildings on the consulted aerial photographs and that consequently their size and shape should be regarded as approximate. The shelters are not visible on more recent aerial photographs of the site, e.g. (S2), and have presumably been levelled.
