Summary

A World War Two air raid shelter is visible as an extant building or structure on 1940s aerial photographs. Its large size and location adjacent to a school (Cobholm First School) suggest that this was a communal shelter, primarily built for the use of pupils and teachers at the school but perhaps also used by members of the public. No trace of the shelter, which was levelled in the post-war period, is visible on aerial photographs of the site taken more recently.

A World War Two air raid shelter is visible as an extant building or structure on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 5156 0759. Its large size and location adjacent to a school (now Cobholm First School) indicate that this was a communal shelter. It was presumably built primarily for the use of pupils and teachers at the school, but it may also have been used by members of the public, such as local residents. It was probably a covered trench shelter, consisting of several long, semi-sunken sections arranged in a rectilinear pattern. Three rectangular blocks built of light-coloured masonry or concrete, visible on the side of the shelter nearest the school building, may mark the location of entrances. The shelter was levelled in the post-war period and no trace of it is visible on recent aerial photographs of the site, e.g. (S4).
