Full Description
May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Two probable air raid shelters dating to World War Two are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs
(S1), centred at TG 5287 0927. They lay in the back gardens of 7 and 9 Sandringham Avenue. This location, together with their small size, suggests that they were private shelters, intended for the use of a particular household. They may have been Anderson shelters, or similar proprietary designs. They are both visible as earthwork mounds, each of which probably covered a small semi-sunken or surface-level structure. Judging by the shape of the mound, the underlying structure at Number 9 probably had a curved shape in profile and a flat, vertical façade at its north end. Neither of the shelters is visible on more recent aerial photographs of the site, see (S2), and they have presumably been levelled.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 22 May 2006.
