Full Description
May 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A group of drainage features is visible as earthworks, vegetation marks and soilmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 5078 0899. Many of the drains are depicted on historic maps, such as Runham Tithe Map (S3), and perhaps originated in the post medieval period. At the same time, the curvilinear, sinuous outline of some of the ditches, particularly the one visible between TG 5067 0894 and TG 5095 0899, suggest that they could have originated as natural saltmarsh creeks. Many such creeks were incorporated into drainage schemes as the marshes were drained from at least the medieval period onwards. The drains described here probably connected to the more substantial drainage features mapped to their north (NHER 4324). One also appears to join the ditch surrounding a probable saltern mound to the northwest (NHER 4322).
S. Tremlett (NMP), 25 May 2006.
