Full Description
September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A possible area of post-medieval turf or peat extraction is visible on aerial photographs within Long Gore Marsh to the east of Hickling Priory (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 4246 2501. In 1943 the site consists of a large water-filled angular and shallow depression, approximately 350m by 240m, with baulks running in-between (S1). The surface material appears to have been removed from the fen creating a shallow ‘turf pond’. The cutting of surface peat continued into the early twentieth century (S3; p81) and it is possible that this cutting is of relatively recent date, however other nearby areas of peat extraction date from the medieval to post-medieval period, see NHER 35363 and 43708-9.
