Full Description
June 2006. Norfolk NMP.
An earthwork of a possible medieval moat or fishpond is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). This earthwork is located at TM 3100 9403, immediately to the north of Wood Farm at Hedenham. The ditches are up to 5m wide and define the south, west and east sides of a possible sub-rectangular enclosure. It has a slightly parallelogram shaped plan and measures at least 44m by 21m internally. No ditch earthwork is visible to form the northern side of the enclosure and it is possible that there was never one present. These earthworks could relate to a small moat or C-shaped fishpond of medieval date. No corresponding feature is marked on the 1839 Hedenham tithe map (S4) or later maps. The site is located immediately to the north of Wood Farm (NHER 43100), a 17th century house, which could have had a medieval precursor. The area of the site was a grass paddock in 1988 and the feature was still visible as a cropmark at that time (S3).
