Full Description
(S1) shows large building aligned north to south with wing projecting east at north end. However (S2) shows same layout as at present; a smaller north to south range, and an east to west range corresponding to the wing. Present north to south range is a terrace of 19th century brick cottages; a pump dated 1821 is not original but was found nearby. East to west range has gabled north to south building at west end, two east-west cottages at centre with south outshuts of 19th century flint and brick; and north to south building at east end with crosswing to south. All exteriors except outshuts rendered over and undateable. Interior of one east-west cottage seen (Middle Blackdoors, no 2); this has one room on each floor; stack to east, crossed by ground floor ceiling beam with large tongue stops; closet each side (stairs now in outshut). First floor suggests by shape of stack that roof has been raised.
Foundations of the demolished larger building exposed at various points in past according to owner but not now visible; he has several pieces of carved Barnack stone window jambs in 14th/15th century style found in them.
A timber shed of slight softwood beams has a carving resembling the date 1570, but this must in fact be something like a deal import number.
The present east to west range looks like a standard off-centre stack house of one storey and attic, 17th century, much altered, and raised in height; but what was the large building to which it was attached and which was demolished between 1840 and 1880?
The context of the reused medieval stone must predate the late 19th century restoration of the parish church; is it from Herringby church (NHER 8592), demolished 1610?
