Full Description
July 2006. Norfolk NMP
Earthworks of enclosures and a possible trackway of medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). These earthworks are centred on TM 3339 9360. Two parallel ditch earthworks are present on a roughly west to east alignment for 95m between TM 3330 9354 to TM 3339 9356. They are spaced 6m apart and may represent a trackway. A narrow ditch earthwork extends northwards from the eastern end of the trackway. Also adjoining the trackway are a number of shorter ditches that appear to define rectilinear enclosures. The most complete enclosure lies to the north of the possible trackway and measures 24m by at least 27m internally. Further incomplete enclosures to its south measure between 28m and at least 35m wide by at least 22m long. Isolated sections of ditch earthwork are also present further to the east in this group. It is likely that this trackway and enclosures are of medieval date. They lie immediately to the northeast of, and on a similar alignment to, earthworks of medieval fields (NHER 44822) and a moat (NHER 10640). Most of the earthworks had been levelled and the field ploughed by 1963 (S3). Only the earthworks in the southwest corner of the group remained at that date. They were still present in 1967 when features in the rest of the field were showing as soilmarks (S4).
