Summary

Metal-detecting between 2006 and 2024 recovered late prehistoric worked flints, including a Neolithic polished axehead; Roman and Middle Saxon to post-medieval pottery sherds; Roman tile fragments; Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; medieval and post-medieval jettons and tokens and Bronze Age to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include Bronze Age casting waste; an Iron Age brooch, harness fitting and harness mount; an Iron Age/Roman harness fitting; Roman brooches, finger-ring, bracelet fragment and toilet spoon; a Roman to Late Saxon bell; an Early Saxon brooch, girdle hanger, model and part of a hanging bowl; Middle Saxon brooches, pins and tweezers; a Middle/Late Saxon brooch, hooked tag, pin and strap-ends; Late Saxon strap ends and a brooch; a Late Saxon to medieval lead spindle whorl; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; medieval harness mounts, a chrismatory, barrel padlock fragment, harness hook, spur rowel, possible needle fragment and lead pot mend; a medieval/post-medieval book clasp, copper alloy vessel fragments, copper alloy rings, lead weights and writing leads; a post-medieval astrolabe, crotal bell, coin weight, book clasp lead weights and a quillon block from a hunting sword and undatable casting waste and a silver sheet strip. The quantity of Middle and Late Saxon finds is suggestive of settlement activity on the site during this period.
