Map

June 2006. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with the construction of a single residential dwelling. From Context 1.
The collapsed remains of a corrugated iron-sheeted tunnel were observed. This structure was probably associated with the area's World War Two defenses (the site is adjacent to an extant World War Two pillbox). Barbed wire and metal fence posts present across much of the site are also likely to have been part of these defences.
Although the examination of aerial photographs has previously identified extensive World War Two remains in this area (NHER 38279) no traces of the features mapped at this location were observed. The location of the tunnel suggests that it did not correspond with any of the mapped features.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
