Full Description
July 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of undated field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs within arable to the north of Low Farm, Aldeby (S1-S3). The site is centred on TM 4542 9609, although this point does not correspond to an archaeological feature associated with this site on the ground. These cropmarks are located within a larger multi-phase spread of cropmarks, recorded under NHER 44867, the majority of which are likely to be field boundaries of several phases.
The field boundaries grouped together under this site follow similar alignment and appear to form fragments of a rectilinear field system. These boundaries show no obvious association with any of the other archaeological features mapped. One of the ditches is either overlain by or overlies the small enclosure (NHER 44859), interpreted as being broadly Iron Age to Roman in date. The fieldwalking at this site indicates a broad chronological range for the site, from Roman through to post medieval (NHER 12138) and therefore the fields could date to any period.
