Full Description
August 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A group of undated linear and curvilinear cropmarks is visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S6), centred at TG 4361 1559. Some may be contemporary with a nearby ring ditch (NHER 18394), which is itself probably of Bronze Age date; a curvilinear mark at TG 4354 1541 could be part of a second ring ditch or could relate to recent agricultural activity. Others could be contemporary with a nearby trackway (NHER 44898), but as the trackway may have remained in use from the later prehistoric period to the post medieval it is impossible to say with which phase they might be associated. A rectilinear pattern of ditches visible immediately to the southwest, which shares the orientation of the trackway and seems likely to represent a contemporary field system, has been recorded separately (NHER 44902). Some of the cropmarks (e.g. the fragmentary double ditch visible between TG 4348 1563 and TG 4357 1564) may equate with field boundaries depicted on historic maps, such as Rollesby Enclosure Map (S7), or at least fit this post medieval pattern field pattern. Others, such as the northwest-to-southeast oriented curvilinear marks visible around close to the ring ditch, may be of recent agricultural origin or a reflection of the underlying geology. These include the ditch visible between TG 4354 1561 and TG 4362 1542, which has the appearance of a relatively modern feature.
It should be noted that the oblique digital photographs of the site (S3)-(S5) were used for mapping but could not be rectified properly due to a lack of suitable control points. This may have had an adverse effect on the accuracy of the mapping.
