Summary

A group of linear cropmarks and possibly a linear earthwork is visible on aerial photographs. The date and function of the features is not known; some may be post medieval field boundaries, while others may be the product of recent agricultural activity and consequently of no archaeological significance. Recent aerial photographs suggest that any earthwork elements that may once have existed have now been levelled.

Map

August 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A group of linear cropmarks and (possibly) an earthwork is visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 4495 1556. The date and function of the features is not known. Some, such as the two aligned segments of ditch visible between TG 4478 1575 and TG 4480 1555, may be post medieval field boundaries, as they fit the same general pattern of enclosure as that depicted on historic maps, e.g. the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map (S4). Others, such as the two parallel ditches visible between TG 4492 1530 and TG 4500 1532, may be the product of recent agricultural activity and of no archaeological significance. A possible earthwork bank, visible between TG 4498 1566 and TG 4503 1550, could instead be the cropmark of a substantial ditch. Either way, it could also represent a post medieval field boundary, or merely recent agricultural activity. There is no sign of any surviving earthworks on more recent aerial photographs of the site.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 4 August 2006.
