Summary

The excavation of a narrow trench located to the north of Norwich Cathedral uncovered the footings of two parallel flint, brick and mortar walls. It is likely that they represent the foundations of Bishop Wakering’s cloister which was built during the 15th century and demolished in the 19th century.

Map

August 2006. Watching brief. Contexts 1-19.
The excavation of a narrow trench located to the north of Norwich Cathedral uncovered the footings of two parallel walls. These footings, which consisted of flint, brick and mortar, were approximately 3.4m apart and were located either side of the area immediately to the north of the door of the north transept. It is likely that these footings represent the foundations of Bishop Wakering’s cloister which was built during the 15th century and demolished in the 19th century.
Three sherds of post Roman pottery were found, as well as disarticulated human remains.
